It's why I'm really interested in how the Disney vs Midjourney case goes down. I really don't like corporate interests, but this is one where I want Disney, the single most aggressive company when it comes to copyright and trademarks, to win. Mainly because of the precedent it will set.

I work in tech, they hate art and artists because they can’t be creative (most of them) and they hate all the soft skills that you need to have to make art.

A little bit of that and a little bit of the fact that white, privileged tech bros aren’t very creative. They have a habit of creating digital facsimiles of things they can’t actually create or do themselves to prove to the world they can. I like to think of it like how a lot of popular music in every genre is just now just hip hop with black culture abstracted. They can make the sounds and aesthetic but never capture the soul

It definately has something to do with them feeling bitter towards artists, either because they view art as below them, or they greatly value it but don’t want to put in the work or aren’t brave enough to pursue it full time.

Nope. They have no correlation whatsoever. It's only that you actually learned what AI (well machine learning to be more preciese) is and how it works after successful commercial products like chatgpt which happened to come after NFTS. AI was still trained the same way for well over a decade at this point and the systems were just less capable and unless you were in the field you were oblivious to it. Maybe copyright was more ok cause R&D mostly realied on large-ish (by those days standards) public datasets but I don't really know if that's true or not.

I think a big part of it is also that NFT’s were supposed to make them in to art owners, like all the super rich people, they would have this private collection of art that is worth millions and they would finally be seen as one of the rich people they so desperately want to be. Gen AI art was supposed devalue real art so it was no longer a hidden metric of being rich but it is also failing to do that so they are stuck with their millions in crypto that they can get out with out risking tanking their coin so they can’t actually use it in the real world

I had learned about nfts from my friend and they sounded so fun to make a digital collectables or something to trade but I wasn't sure and didn't know how it worked and by the time I did I wasn't comfortable doing it,, from my experience with AI it is very plausible that similar to wanting to make money from trading nfts, AI lets them fuel ideas that a lot of the time are like "this is what they could be doing for so much money"

Nfts and AI art are basically the same thing in terms of how they're made. AI art is just way more advanced. They're both procedurally generated by computer algorithms

i think in 5 years AI art will run into a wall and will become very distorted since it will be trained on its own products and overemphasize it's subtle mistakes and lack of human factor

Okay, hold it. That’s not what happened. Okay, as an artist who tried converting his work into NFTs, you should know that NFTs were never about that. It was form of like stock, and honestly if they just committed to making professional artists work the focus of it than I think we would be chilling. AI Bros are just wanting to not pay artists to do things

This is actually really interesting. Walter Benjamin talked about this in ‘The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’ (1936). Benjamin argues that mechanical reproduction removes an artwork's ‘aura’, which is its uniqueness and ritual status as a handmade object

i’m hoping and praying that AI is going to start dying out and become largely forgotten like NFTs did (i know NFTs are still a thing but they’re not anywhere as big anymore). unfortunately i’m not convinced it’ll really happen, but i’ll take any hope i can get these days 😭
