@justonthespectrum: I wanted to pause and mark where we are with back-and-forth conversations… …something we really haven’t had until now. But they’re still not conversations most would recognize. They take reading his gestures, facial expressions, and vocalizations… but they’re there. He just needs more time, more vocabulary, and more practice. And I have such high hopes we’ll get there. Also… It’s not that I’m endlessly patient. Truthfully, I am generally impatient. But with Michael’s gentle nature, patience comes easier. A simple hard stare and a firm word are usually enough for him to listen. And when I do say “yes” more often, it’s not about giving in to his oh-so-sweet expressions… …it’s about remembering my own childhood. I know how much it meant when my parents chose “yes” instead of a hard “no,” even just once. Those moments stayed with me to this day. And I can’t help but hope those same small moments will stay with him, too. 🥹 Appreciate all the seemingly endless “why,” “what’s that,” and “are we there yet?” conversations with your little ones while they’re young. — Those moments may feel repetitive or exhausting, but they’re a sign of connection, curiosity, and growth. — Now imagine going six years without a single back-and-forth conversation with your child. Six years of wondering what’s on their mind, what they’re curious about, what they wish they could tell you. Six years of filling in the blanks and reading every gesture, every glance, every sound for clues. — That’s been our reality with Michael. And now, as we begin to experience those first little exchanges…they feel like the greatest gift in the world. 💛 ______ 🎬 Catch all the exclusive, on-the-go stories and insights into our daily approach to education and therapy on the Subscribers’ Page 👑 ______ 📔eBook on Joint Attention & collection of activities, link in BIO 🔗 📔[NEW] eBook on a collection of activities for Speech Exercises, link in BIO 🔗 #funny #heartwarming #parenting #autism #AutismParenting #communication #inspiration #motivation #nonspeaking #nonverbal #signlanguage #ASL #autismawareness

I can see back and forth conversations. Things that weren’t there before and it’s beautiful. Yes his gentle nature helps with your patience- but your LOVE constant guidance and higher level of patience than you may realize (and I believe God) has MADE this possible. It is absolutely beautiful to see him finding his voice more and more. Even if it comes with expressions, voice tones and small words.
