@waterfowlrescue: Ever wonder what we do when a hummingbird comes in with a split beak? This tiny ruby throated hummingbird arrived with a clean split across the lower beak. To stabilize it, we carefully placed a plastic tube over the break as a makeshift splint. The opening still allowed his tongue to move through so he could eat while it healed. This kind of adjustment needed to be made quickly as hummingbirds have to eat every 10-15 minutes. In some cases, we may consider gluing the beak if the bird is stable enough. Wildlife rehab means getting creative, especially when your patient weighs less than a nickel.
