Is the spray going to yellow overtime, or create a different sheen on the canvas?

It doesn't technically dry it, it encapsulates it so it's dry to the touch. I'd caution doing this on a painting you're putting effort into and do some sample testing. It actually slows the curing time with normal oil based paint for trim. Maybe art paint is different but I wouldn't want you to ruin an art piece.

Wouldn’t that make it more susceptible to cracking

I think the make mediums you could mix the oil paint with to help it dry quicker. Not instantly. But quicker. You could try linseed oil.

Well... you actually just encased it into a varnish shell that dries extremely quickly... The oil base below still needs to cure and gas off, Don't be surprised if you get crack through or bubbling later on. But just my 2cents, you're the professional 😃

Doesn’t varnish mixed into the pain cause it to turn yellow later. So if the painting is 30 years old and the color changes it will be in the paint and not on top of the paint. This make it imposible to conserve the painting in later generations.

But you’re not drying the paint underneath. The paint underneath doesn’t finish off gassing just because you’ve dried the top layer. The layer underneath is going to continue to off gas and if those two chemicals aren’t compatible you’re gonna have a problem

Speaking from experience, if you do that your painting will crack within one or two years.

I came to the comments to say what many of said about it. In the time it took to read a few comments I realized how deflating they could have been. So I'm gonna change my message... Keep "trial and erroring"! Whatever you need to do to make it easier to paint more, DO THAT. I will urge you to look into the chemistry and science behind oils and mediums as you go and if you really enjoy painting you'll be interested in the science as well and. If people are looking at your stuff 150 years from now and point out the different finishes and say, "That's when Lex was experimenting with spray on varnishes." Well, we should all be so lucky!

Kevin, but in a good way :
One time I spent a month scraping the paint from a waste treatment plant settling pit because someone painted a fast drying coat over an oil based paint. There was this goo underneath that never dried. Not sure what made me think of that just now.

Could just use acrylic paint? Is there something specific about oils that makes it a preference?

mix in Japan Drier, we use it as house painters to get an oil we use to dry fast. it's red but it won't change the color

I mean how do people know there isn’t a chemical reaction with what was sprayed? In all likelihood the comments are right but everyone is talking with such certainty about the chemistry without truly knowing the chemistry
