@pbsnews: What different weather alerts mean The National Weather Service (NWS) pushes out alerts to an Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) to sound alarms and warnings during major weather events. The critical service alerts are then pushed to commercial wireless carriers and broadcast to televisions and cell phones across the nation. Matthew Cappucci, a meteorologist at MyRadar, breaks down what some of the major weather alerts are and what they mean. @matthewcappucci #nationalparkservice #nws #ipaws #weatheralert #weather #weathertok#servicealert #tsunami #flood #blizzard #ice #frozenlake #dust #extremewind #hurricane
Now every thunderstorm is “severe weather.” Any rain is “severe weather.” Let’s address this.

A “watch” means they’re warning you. A “warning” means they’re watching it happen. I always thought that was silly.

Education. If people can’t/won’t figure out this system, there’s a chance they can’t/won’t learn the next. Education is needed for either. 🤔

Education on the differences between watches, warnings, PDS warnings and emergency enhanced warnings. Our PBS member station is the only station in our area that disseminates National Weather Service Alerts and their verbiage has degraded a lot over the past 5 years. Plus, folks don’t know the difference of a severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado warning.

I'm not shaming anyone's confusion, but the watch/warning alert differences always seemed obvious to me. I think no matter what terms are used some people will get them mixed up. Maybe we just need a super catchy jingle. Look at Mr. ZIP from the 60s.

I’ve tried to explain watch and warning alerts to my family and friends. Basically, I tell them a “watch” is just be on watch for a certain weather event. A “warning” is like it’s here, the weather event is imminent and we are going to “war” (warning) with the weather.

It was built on science rather than sociology. It makes sense if you understand the potential of acute effects based on the type of weather, but not if you’re equating “warning” with simply “immediate danger.”

All I want is my phone to give me the necessary alerts that I need. I get multiple "Air Quality" alerts everyday for multiple counties cuz it's summer and it's hot. I don't care about receiving these. Severe thunderstorm warning or a tornado warning/emergency with sirens and I get nothing.
