@sweetweeby: I am at my wits end in my PC building jounrey! What are the odds that ill get a third faulty set of RAM?👀 #PC #PCbuild #tech #gaming #retro
Motherboards come with aggressive default UEFI settings that are often over spec. They are chasing goofy 0.5% faster benchmark scores for marketing. This causes a lot of issues with RAM. Look up RAM operating specs for your CPU from the CPU maker. In the case of not booting, drop down to 1 stick which usually will boot and set sane settings before adding the 2nd stick.

from my experience, check the QVL compatibility matrix for your motherboard. certain motherboard/cpu/ram combinations are only rated for certain speeds and won’t boot.

Don’t worry, mine was out of commission for a week and I couldn’t find out what was wrong. Soon it will be over and you will be over the moon with your new pc!

It's probably the bios setting for your ram.

depending on the motherboard, and boot sequence ram placement matters .

Ok so here’s the thing building a computer is very delicate. One wrong move with ur motherboard and u risk breaking something (physically) sometimes it’s impossible to trace. Even a slight bend and damage it sometimes and u have to send it back or get it replaced. U may have a motherboard problem. U NEVER force any part of a computer into a certain place, if u have to use strength to get a part into place then it’s not suppose to go there and you’re doing it wrong. Motherboards have sizes like ATX and micro ATX. Ur chassis has to match that size in order for u to not run into the issue u just ran into.

MicroCenter is a great place to shop but their techs are very mid. They’re just gonna switch out each part one by one until it works, which you could’ve done yourself for free.

Have they tried to see if Linux would boot? Maybe the problem is a broken SSD/a faulty windows install.

Have you tried adding all of your PCs parts to pcpicker to see if there is any incompatibility issues first?

I feel your pain, for the past 6 months I was getting non stop BSODs, then I took a leap of faith and changed the CPU PSU and added a AIO cooler... my PC has worked flawlessly now. I'm on almost day 12 without a single BSOD 🤞🏻

wirh retro pcs i really dont recommend trying a hybrid between modern and retro, the tech evolved so fast that it’s really hard to get everything to work together in something like that. i would recommend running a virtualbox on a modern gaming pc, or buying an older retro pc off of ebay and tinkering with adding in a *period accurate* dedicated graphics card (ive done both so both).

Memtest86 in a flash drive anytime you get new hardware. It'll functionality and stress test basically every component but hard drives. I use it in any new build just to make sure parts are working before I even mess with Windows.

Big box stores are not the best tech support, always recommend finding non chain local techs. But I get why you started there.
It could be the Mobo not the RAM. but I always tell people to check their Mobo QVL list on the website. This will tell you if the RAM config/brand/speed/capacity has been tested and is know to work. The more modules, the faster it is, the higher capacity, the more unstable it is so you need higher quality ram.
No need to go with the bleeding edge.
But good luck and hopefully you get it back soon!

I see this is your first rodeo with bad ram, welcome to the club. It sucks, but it really often is the problem as I've also learned the frustratijg way lol
