Let them get into a pool with a puddle jumper on WITH YOU in the pool —now you are actively participating in teaching them to be worse at swimming. 3. Let them jump in the pool with a puddle jumper -now they think if they fall in a pool, they will pop back up. 4. Have them practice kicking in the pool with a puddle jumper on —now you are training them to exert maximal energy for minimal directional gain. The kicks that make a child move in a PJ are not at all what swimming flutter kicks are. You are training a tight, stomping, pedaling motion. (Potentially lifelong) 5. Telling them good job while wearing a puddle jumper — now you are conditioning them to think they are good at swimming. Making them more confident and curious during non swim times. 6. Telling family and friends how confident they are in the pool if they uses a puddle jumper —now you have told your family that they can be more relaxed supervising your child. Solution.  You have a few weeks until summer. Your bath tub is an asset. If you follow my guide to acclimating the child, you can start strong this summer with HORIZONTAL body positioning. But this cannot happen if your child is still reactive to water in the face.  Don’t stay trapped in the puddle jumper scam until your kid is standing in pools.
