“In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place. And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgement than for that city!” -Mark 6:10-11 #fyp

What is that green?! My first thought was the harbour seal had rubbed itself on a dock covered in algae but of course nature isn't that boring + This is from a lit review by Hayes, Coddle, and Allen (2022) "at least eight genera of photosynthetic cyanobacteria and algae colonizing the pelage of six species of pinnipeds. The relationship may be considered a facultative association, beneficial to the photosynthetic epizoans and relatively neutral (but perhaps slightly costly) to their mammalian hosts. We studied the incidence of algal growth on the pelage of harbor seals in central California during 1985-1987 and 2017. The green alga Ulva sp. occurred on adult females throughout the year and rarely occurred on adult males. Algal growth appeared to be most frequent during the breeding season (February to May) and least frequent during the molt and post-molt seasons (June to October). Algal growth occurred more frequently on harbor seals in estuaries than along the coast. Much remains to be learned about the colonization of pinnipeds by photosynthetic epizoans and why some seals are more susceptible to colonization by algae than others." ⚠️ if you are in BC and see, what you think, is a marine mammal in distress the best thing you can do for the animal is to call @Marine Mammal Rescue Society on 604-258-SEAL (7325). Never attempt to help the animal yourself. While we humans think we are "helping" because our intentions are good, we can misinterpret natural occurrences like this and can make a benign situation into an actual problem. 📖 https://www.researchgate.net/publication/ 358972377_Epizoic_Cyanobacteria_and_Algae_on_the_Pel age_of_Pinnipeds_A_Literature_Review_and_New_Data_fo r_the_Harbor_Seal_Phoca_vitulina 📍 on the dock Port Sidney Marina in K'omoks traditional territory.
