@dailymavericksa: Some people don’t have an ‘inner voice’, but maybe those who do shouldn’t be smug, says Daily Maverick Associate Editor, Marianne Thamm. I still do not understand what is meant by 'inner monologue'... I have my own inner voice when I think, that is, I can think by 'speaking to myself in my mind'... But I don't have a constant narrator to point out to me the things I see or feel, what would be the point since I am experiencing them in the first person? Ah same with visualisation... That freaking apple, I know what it looks like, but.... What do you mean you see it?

I'm confident that a lot of the research into this relies on people misunderstanding the question. It's not a separate voice in your head talking to you, it's just you thinking in words and sentences.

I have aphantasia (lack of inner imagery) and anauralia (lack of inner sound). I have a perfectly rich inner life! LOL I didn’t even realize things were different inside there for me from others. I thought “a song stuck in my head” was a metaphor. I think metacognitively and in patterns, symbols, meanings, without words. Obviously I’ve learned to think in words as well, but it’s not my native tongue, so to speak

How would you read a book without an inner voice? Without the ability to create the scenario in your mind? How would that work?

I don’t have an inner voice, can’t visualise (this is aphantasia), think neither in words nor images but flashes (unless I need to plan something or rehearse a conversation). My default mode of being is total quiet. But I am very analytical and critical.

I don’t have an inner monologue, however, I have many deep thoughts. There’s just no voice.

If it were 75%, wouldn’t the article headline read “25% report hearing voices”?

I'm suspicious of judgments that assume people without an inner monologue are only reacting to the world instead of thinking about it. I have no coherent monologue or dialogue, only a neverending earworm of bits of songs and phrases I've heard recently. At best I have a narrator who pops out sometimes to try out different wordings to describe my current actions or to compose something important I want to say. But I've never experienced having a "little voice" to talk to, and I can't mentally picture more than a fragment of an image which lasts just a split second. Even of a loved one's face. Still, I write fiction and nonfiction. I exercise critical thinking. Admittedly, writing can often make it easier to capture my thoughts in a deliberate way, but they are happening even when I can't "hear" them.

Aphantasia is the inability to visualise. It’s separate and distinct from not having an inner dialogue. In fact, most people I’ve interviewed who don’t have an inner dialogue think in images not words. I have an inner dialogue + aphantasia (I can’t visualise). It’s wild to me that there are people who are the opposite.

There's also the possibility that they don't notice, or are unaware of the inner monolog. Perhaps for many it stays within the subconscious realm simply because they have never been self reflective log enough to notice/identity it.
