This could have been a better storyline for season 2, they wasted Leighton Meester and the mother plot line. In season 1, that storyline was key for Nan’s character.

Why we need to return to 22-25 episode seasons, everyone is trying to cram a lot into just 8 episodes. It’s difficult to have character development, relationships and conflicts in 45 minutes, the time jumps just don’t help either
