Our dog started to associate the crate with us leaving so we now leave him in there 1 hour after breakfast and dinner to have him used to being in the crate while we are home doing whatever. It also prevents him from running around after eating so he’s less likely to get bloat!

My dog is the opposite if I crate him and walk away and he can’t see me he’s ok but if he can see me in the crate he’s like “Why am I not there with you?”

Mine goes through phases with his crate.. he was so great at first and then went though a phase of refusing to go in and now goes in on command without a fuss 🤪 he’ll be 2 next week so I’m anticipating another phase shortly.

I know you said he gets fomo but wanted to offer what helped for us - when I cover the crate entirely he seems to settle more/feel he can turn off especially since he doesn’t know if I’m there or not kinda gives him a cave. Not sure if Winston would be receptive to that though

I crate trained both of my goldens (helped so much with potty training) and I WISH I could do this but I’ve gotten used to the babies sleeping with me!

MOVE THE CRATE AROUND THE HOUSE!!! It’s easy for them to get comfortable with the crate always being in the same spot so mix it up and move him to different rooms so he learns that the crate is for settling regardless of where it is

I used to struggle having my dog in a crate, now I struggle getting her out 😭 she loves her crate so so much to the point that I only open it when I go to work and lock it up (without her inside) so she doesn’t go to the crate

i would recommend doing short sessions with him in the crate decompressing and you sitting on the couch doing your own decompressions

I feel this - Cooper is the same!! He also is great with pattern recognition and won’t follow the crate command when he ~thinks~ he’ll be locked in. So we are also re-crate training 🤣

I so wish I could re crate train my 1.5 yo lab. He has panic attacks in the crate and has a good amount of anxiety/sep anxiety so we haven’t used one in at least a year…
