Mdungazwe Nxumalo kaMzila or Ngungunyane, was the last king of the Gaza Empire. The Nguni Empire was founded and ruled by his grandfather Soshangane kaZikode Nxumalo. It covered present-day parts of Mozambique, parts of Zimbabwe & parts of South Africa. As European powers gathered in Berlin to carve up Africa, much of the continent had already fallen under colonial rule. But not the Gaza Empire. Ruled by the shrewd and diplomatic King Ngungunyane, he skillfully played the British and Portuguese against each other to maintain his power. His reign was built on alliances through marriage, and the suppression of his rivals. It all began to crumble as former allies or chiefs abandoned him. In 1895, the Portuguese defeated Ngungunyane, capturing him and his wives. They were taken to Lisbon, Portugal where they were publicly exhibited like trophies, before being exiled to the island of Terceira in the Azores. Ngungunyane died in exile in 1903, but his legacy lives on. Decades later, Mozambican president Samora Machel rediscovered his story, bringing a fistful of earth from his burial site to declare him a national hero in 1985. Today, Ngungunyane remains a controversial figure, celebrated by some as a symbol of resistance, and criticized by others for his methods. His story is a powerful reminder of Africa’s complex history and the fight against colonialism.
