As an avid outdoorswoman in the PNW, I agree with you, but something I respected about this woman’s story is that she genuinely learned from her experience and is approaching it from a place of respect, gratitude and a willingness to learn. So many people have crazy expectations that the natural world should “cater” to the inexperienced visiting those spaces which is honestly a wild take. Everyone has to start somewhere. I high key blame a lot of this bullshit on social media & guided experiences making these spaces appear accessible when it actually takes learning & preparation & physical abilities to enjoy them.

As an Oregonian raising a child on the East Coast, I'm constantly explaining this to people over here, who can't fathom how dangerous the terrain is in the PNW, and how different the Pacific ocean is from the Alantic. Its wild to me!

Yes! I feel the same way about this and also people going inside the Ice Caves. They’re closed for a reason, people have died

I wholeheartedly agree... my bf & I want to go ocean kayaking for the 1st time (we only have done freshwater so far) & we are hiring a guide because even though we are experienced kayakers... we dont know the ocean like that 👀 Nature can be so dangerous, respect it

I don’t think she was treating it like no big deal. I think everyone just handles traumatic events differently. It’s good that she’s sharing what can happen

I did not get “hehe haha vibes” from her video at all. I thought she conveyed well that she learned her lesson and I’ve never seen any content about kayaking in PNW before and now I have and know to be safe, so it worked in my case 🤷♀️

I watched the same thing and I was so annoyed. They knew they shouldn’t go past a certain point but thought it was fine anyway so they did it. It’s almost like there are rules for a reason.

And yes, I lived in Zion national Park for seven months and now I am in Port Angeles outside of Olympic national Park and I am always shocked by the amount of people that I see hiking without water!!!

My favorite part was when she said they told her not to leave the bay and they immediately left the bay 🙃

also make sure you have a life jacket and that it is FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. I got very stuck clinging to my kayak while my brother towed us back to shore and my life jacket completely unzipped once I was in the water!!

Sadly people will continue making these mistakes. I’m in Iceland right now and people literally go walking on glaciers and disappear into crevices never to be seen again. They walk too close to the water and get taken and killed by sneaker waves despite high, light-up warning signs. I grew up in Arizona where people walk up mountains or into the Grand Canyon when it’s 115 degrees and they simply perish from the heat. Some people really don’t have any survival instincts and you’re right, it endangers others.

I live on Whidbey island and every year some kayaker or paddle boarder is injured or killed at deception pass. The water is no joke here.

I live in phoenix and every week in the summer people have to get rescued from various trails around here bc they went hiking at 1 pm when it’s 110 out. Unforced error. The state charges them for their rescue if they survive lol

You could not pay me to go more than ankle deep in ocean water in the pnw. My mom lost multiple classmates in the 60s growing up on the Oregon coast.

The worst I've seen is on Damon Point. It's a deep sand hike with rocky patches and high winds that people underestimate because it's flat. They have to look up the tides & respect them because cutting through the middle means disrupting sensitive habitat and breeding ground. the last few years of erosion means you risk getting cut off from the mainland if you don't pay attention and the current in there is no joke. Kayakers get flipped trying to make it to the beach all the time

I was SO ANNOYED with her video! like, fine I guess if you want to put yourself in harm's way, but making a situation where others are at risk is whack and not remotely funny.

I saw that too! Deception pass is soooo scary just from beach! And to top it off, the most definitely did not have kayaks specifically designed for the ocean
