Diaspora communities are usually time capsules of the time they left their home country. In southeast Asia's case it's around the 19th century and early 20th century that mass migration of Chinese came over so the practices or evolved versions of those practices are what are still being done in the communities. meanwhile china evolved differently due to the cultural revolution so many of those practices were either banned or not done anymore.

I wouldn't say ONLY SH but SH in particular. Many places still preserve certain traditional traits. But they are considerably less compared to SEA and TW. Mainly because of the cultural revolution.

I think being a minority also helps make people cherish their traditions as something distinct to hold on to

you'll probably need to ask people from Guangdong or Fujian. Most of the Chinese diaspora in ASEAN are from the southern coastal provinces of China.

I think this is true for all diaspora communities. They usually preserve cultural practices and traditions that have evolved or died down in their mother country

Tradition is overrated. Scientific and rationalism are more important.

most Chinese people don't even believe in Buddhism, there are perhaps more real Christian than Buddhist. especially in the north. have you ever been to the north? you understand we are very different from each other, right?

China was not a Buddhism country since the collapse of Tang dynasty, Zhongyuan is just a Buddhism festival, how that represents Chinese culture? it's something much more universal.

but also, China is so big that different regions prioritize different festivals. the "diaspora Chinese communities" usually are from the south coast and they keep a very small sector of tradition which isn't representative of the entire Chinese culture. to say who is "more traditional" is simply wrong.

This feels just like your urban family never valued these things ? Shanghai was also never a cultural center but I know plenty of Shanghainese people who do celebrate. These are also all holidays I grew up with in Beijing. People saying that only Taiwan and diaspora preserved these traditions are either uninformed or lying🙄

ughhhh misinformation at its best. your parents don't know doesn't mean other people don't. for shanghainese people, winter solstice in our family we eat 芋艿 and 老鸭汤. 崇明人吃羊肉. and different family has different traditions because Shanghai is a immigrant city so families kept their unique culture. Ningbo families will have different customs than a Suzhou family for example.

well, not sure what makes you qualify for selecting the "well persevered Chinese culture" here, feels a bit negligent regarding the diversity of China.
