Meet Kristina Kristina is 24 years old and has a small baby. When I saw her today, she was holding a sign that said she was in need of food, diapers, wipes, and baby clothes. Kristina was adopted and mentioned some of the trauma and abuse she experienced as a child. Sometimes people assume individuals are experiencing homelessness because of their own mistakes, but that’s not always the case. I’ve met many people who have faced health issues that caused them to lose their jobs and homes. Some struggle with mental health challenges, physical and mental disabilities, or have endured physical and sexual abuse. It’s disheartening to continue hearing from young women who have been taken advantage of while experiencing homelessness. This is something no one should ever have to endure, and we must do what we can to help them off the streets. Kristina mentioned that she has a sister who helps when she can, but the support is minimal because her sister is dealing with personal challenges of her own. Kristina is currently staying with a friend, but she can only remain there until Saturday. After that, she and her baby will have to go to the local women’s shelter and hope to get a bed each night, as shelters have been overcrowded lately. Kristina shared that she previously worked as a housekeeper but found it challenging to adjust to the routine. She mentioned that she is autistic and simply needed more time to learn the tasks. My goal for Kristina is to provide as much help as possible with temporary housing, food, diapers, wipes, and assistance applying for additional government aid. I also hope to help her secure permanent housing and find a job that accommodates her needs and supports her through her mental health challenges. I cannot do this alone. Kristina is someone’s daughter who doesn’t have much support, but we can change that. I’m asking for your help to give Kristina and her baby a way to a fresh start.
