Saint Patrickās Day, plastered in green and soaked in cheap comdaties, is a day most people recognize as a celebration of Irish culture. But dig beneath the surface, and youāll find a history rooted in colonial violence and class struggle, twisted over centuries to suit the interests of the powerful. The origins of the holiday are tangled up in the forced Christianization of Ireland, where Saint Patrick, a Romano-British missionary, was used as a tool to suppress Indigenous Celtic traditions. After his death, Patrickās legacy was reshaped and weaponized to justify the English conquest of Ireland. The colonial project gained steam, particularly in the 17th century, when Cromwellās armies butchered Irish civilians and seized their land, all while the myth of Patrick was further manipulated to erase Irish resistance. The Penal Laws that followed stripped the mostly Catholic poor of their rights, cementing English control and deepening exploitation. Today, whatās marketed as Irish pride is mostly a sanitized, commercialized spectacle. Plastic shamrocks and green beer drown out the true history of Irelandās struggle against oppression. Capitalism thrives on gutting genuine resistance, and selling it back to people as a novelty. Meanwhile, Irelandās history of famine, forced migration, and rebellion gets smothered by parody and boozy clichĆ©s. And for the Irish working class, whether in Ireland itself or scattered across Britain, the United States, and beyond, the holiday often becomes just another reminder of how their history has been commodified and distorted. But thereās another side to Saint Patrickās Day, one rooted in working-class resilience and defiance. For generations, poor Irish communities used the day to assert their identity and dignity against the forces trying to crush them. In the overcrowded slums of Liverpool, Glasgow, New York, and Boston, Saint Patrickās Day was claimed by the dispossessed as an act of cultural survival. It was a way to reject the shame imposed by landlords, bosses, and bigots. The revolutionary socialists of Irelandās past understood this dynamic. James Connolly and the rebels of the 1916 Rising drew on that same spirit of defiance, blending national liberation with the fight for working-class power. For them, the question of Irish freedom was always bound up with the struggle against capitalism and exploitation. An independent Ireland meant nothing if it was still ruled by landlords and capitalists. So, what does Saint Patrickās Day mean today for those fighting for real change? Itās not about green beer or tacky parades. Itās about honoring the revolutionary spirit of the Irish poor, the tenant farmers who resisted evictions, the laborers who fought for better conditions, the rebels who took up arms against imperialist domination. Itās about recognizing that the fight for freedom and justice is international and deeply intertwined with the broader struggle against capitalism. This Saint Patrickās Day, get rid of the plastic and the platitudes. Remember that Irelandās history is one of resistance, not resignation. Itās about solidarity with all oppressed people, standing against the systems that profit from our exploitation and division. Because thereās no true liberation without dismantling the structures of power that keep us all in chains, but with that, in want to wish a Happy Saint Patrickās Day to all my Irish comrades, don't go to hard on the drinking, but we know that won't be the case. #fyp #4u #123 #foru #xyz #foryoupage #viral #trend #socialism #communism #capitalism #Marxist #MarxismLeninism #usa #us #leftist #leftwing #LeftistTikTok #sovietrussia #sovietnostalgia #soviet #cccp #ccp #europe #eu #AntiCapitalism #Lenin #KarlMarx #VladimirLenin #eastberlin #eastgermany #chinaa #russia #moscow #cuba #cubanrevolution #fidelcastro #fidelcastro #rosaluxemburg #karlliebknecht #christ #Christianity #catholic #ireland #irish #irelandšØš® #irishtiktok #saintpatricksday #stpatricksday #š®šŖ #š®šŖš©
