Sometimes you stumble upon a place so breathtaking, words literally escape you. The St Johnsbury Athenaeum did exactly that to me. When my book blogger friend messaged me about this Vermont treasure, I had no idea I was about to step into one of the most stunning spaces I've ever experienced (ironic that I'd be left speechless while surrounded by 45,000 books, right?). Worth every minute of the 50-minute drive from the Omni Mt Washington. This place silenced me into complete awe. For those wondering, an athenaeum is a library or institution devoted to literature and learning, often housing both books and art. In ancient Greece, it was a space dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom. This one delivers on every level: French inspired architecture with soaring windows, intricate woodwork at every turn, floors of alternating ash and walnut strips beneath your feet, and spiral staircases that look like they belong in a fairytale. And tucked in the back? A small art gallery that feels like a secret world. Here’s a few details worth noting: 📚 Founded as a library in 1871 by Horace Fairbanks 📚 Houses nearly 45,000 volumes of books 📚 Home to the oldest unaltered art gallery still standing in the United States 📚 Has a special connection to my hometown: Horace's brother, Franklin Fairbanks, was one of the founders of Winter Park, Florida AND Rollins College! The best part? It's free to enter (though donations are warmly encouraged, especially to help them restore the tower). And despite being a historic landmark, they're refreshingly modern and take Venmo. They also have a charming little bookshelf of gifts if you want to support them. I couldn't resist grabbing a couple of bookmarks and a t-shirt for Pete. TIP: We needed a coffee stop after spending the morning road tripping to a library and found a great local spot at A Place Above The Notch in the nearby town of Bethlehem. If you're ever near St Johnsbury, Vermont, do yourself a favor and visit this architectural and literary treasure.
