You can be educated and still be influenced, especially when the system has its hand in the music. A video of Black college graduates dancing at their ceremony has made its rounds online. While the celebration was well-earned and filled with joy, it also reveals something worth examining: the power of influence. Music, especially today’s mainstream hip hop, is one of the strongest forces shaping how we talk, how we act, and how we see ourselves. This isn’t about judging the graduates, they accomplished something major and deserve recognition. But we also have to ask: Why is it so normal to see our people instantly shift their behavior the moment a beat drops? This goes beyond fun. The industry has normalized us calling ourselves N-words and our women B-words, and made that the soundtrack to our lives. That’s not freedom, that’s conditioning. Much of this is by design. Institutions like the Tavistock Institute study mass behavior. Laws like the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2013 allow propaganda in media. And behind some of the biggest artists are industry plants placed to influence culture, not just sell records. So even with degrees in hand, we must understand: the system works hard to shape the minds of even the most educated. To truly elevate Black culture, we must become intentional about what we consume and what we create. A powerful culture looks like self-respect, clarity, creativity, unity, and truth. It looks like music that empowers, not degrades. Language that builds, not breaks. Representation that reflects the best in us, not a stereotype crafted for us. You can be educated and still be influenced, but when you become aware of that influence, you reclaim your power. That’s how we rise.
