Trusts are just a legal construct (similar in some respects to a Limited Company) where one designated party (the trustee) looks after (I.e. makes decisions, investments, etc.) assets on behalf of another (the trustor, or beneficiary), and sometimes there is a trust manager who looks after the admin. Those are the three main parties to a trust. occasionally you get some other roles. Sometimes the trust may have a cross-border aspect (often used for tax benefits). They are often used for succession planning (e.g. transferring assets from the owner of the assets to beneficiaries of an estate). And the trust will usually have some sort of constitutional document that sets forth the purpose of the trust and certain rules governing the trust (is it maybe called a trust deed? idk). For example a trust may specify that funds may not be disbursed to the beneficiaries until they reach a certain age, or until other qualifying criteria are met. I'm sorry this is a total lay-man's explanation, I'm not a lawyer, but I covered trust in my bankers exams once upon a time. They are straight forward enough, the easiest way to understand them is to draw out the structure of the trust on a piece of paper. And write down the role/ responsibility of each. The two main aspects of a trust are ownership and control. I.e. who owns the funds, and who controls the funds. once you identify the key players in these roles the rest is straight forward enough. Occasionally you come across trusts with slightly unorthodox structures... just sketch it out on a piece of paper and it will begin to make sense.
