@rokrsdriveclub: AWD isn’t just “baby 4WD.” 4WD isn’t just “off-road AWD.” They’re built different. Used different. And most people still don’t know when to use what. Watch this before you lock your diffs on dry pavement. #carfacts #awdvs4wd #carcontent #learnaboutcars #rokrsdriveclub
Subaru is the only manufacturer to make and all-wheel-drive system with a dual range transmission

This is a little loose but a good general review for AWD vs 4WD but not all AWD are made the same, RWD/FWD biased systems have different amounts of control and there are TRUE full time AWD drivetrains like Audi Quattro and Subaru Synmetrical drive where power adjusts but all 4 wheels are always going vs something like 4Motion, XDrive, etc which may have 0/100 or 10/90 power splits. The full time AWD WILL benefit you in snow as much as 4WD. What you’re missing in this scenario is: low gear/4 Low and ground clearance vs using momentum in a car without low gear if you’re in some thicker stuff. Still wouldn’t take my S4 into the Rockies though but there is a middle ground like the Crosstrek, lifted WRXs, etc. just depends if you want to rock crawl or cross mud bogs.
