Some real life classroom moments. This is the first time K is in the Music room (specials have been pushing into their classrooms since the beginning of school) and after doing some singing and moving activities we end the class by taking a “Music Walk” During the first part of class, as we were doing our other activities I casually I went to each of the centers myself and introduced the instruments and talked about my expectations for how they would be musical on those instruments. They are divided into groups of 4-5 students visiting 6 centers around the perimeter of the room. Center 1: two bass xylophones and a bunch of mallets. Center 2: a giant marimba, some guiros, and a large gong. Center 3: a bin of playground balls and 2 large scarf canopies. Center 4: different drums of all sizes Center 5: the piano and a bunch of puppets. Center 6: an alto metallophone, wind chimes, a suspended triangle, a small pan drum, a thumb piano, and a tambourine. The aide and I divided the kids up and had each group sit on a large dot spot in front of their center to start. This is the first time they have heard the word counterclockwise. I don’t give them any explanation but just say “Point your toes in this direction” I told them they would have time to explore the instruments at each center, and that they should take turns. When they heard the slide whistle, they should turn their bodies to me and echo the sound and prepare to move on. You’ll hear me reference some of the pillars of music that we have that they’ve been learning since the beginning of the year, like red light, listening, being musical, and the one of the newest, which is “No no touchy…unless I have permission!” which they love to say 🤣 I will be honest and say this is something I kind of put together at the last minute before the first kindergarten class of the rotation as a fun way to introduce them to the room and make concrete some of the things we’ve been talking about as far as how we operate as a music community. I didn’t spend a ton of time curating perfect centers, but the kids had a blast, and I was very pleased with how they responded, but also how well things flowed.
