Here’s what’s happening when you “forget but know you forgot”:
Encoding vs. Retrieval: The memory was encoded, but the retrieval cue is weak or missing. Your brain knows a trace exists somewhere because related patterns or context are active, but the exact content can’t be reconstructed.
Metacognition: The feeling that you’ve forgotten something comes from the brain’s monitoring system. Certain areas (like the prefrontal cortex) can detect that “there’s something missing here” even if the hippocampus can’t retrieve it fully.
Interference: New memories or similar experiences can overwrite or confuse older ones. Your brain senses a gap, but can’t pinpoint the original memory because the neural signals are tangled.
Tip-of-the-tongue effect: You often remember fragments — a letter, a category, an emotion — without the full memory. That’s your brain signaling: “I know something is here, I just can’t get the whole pattern.”

Forgetting is used to describe the act of not remembering. And we only know/realize that we (don’t remember)/forgot but not remember that we don’t remember/forgot because it is a happening in real time. like forgetting/not remembering was never stored in the brain so it just happens and you know it.

The brain forgets what you forgot but remember you forgot but can’t remember what you’ve forgotten in the first place that thing you remembered that you’ve forgotten.
