my people was in the lower 9th ward when they BLEW the levees up. My grandma said they was all in the living room sleep and she was cooking on a burner late that night. They heard an explosion that shook the house and everyone literally woke up. After the storm they went to the out house to get some more meat and everything was semi dry. The water started to come slow but it wasn’t raining when it came. They blew it up because i don’t think concrete breaking on wet soil could wake EVERYONE UP with a loud “boom”

You may not be an engineer but this was explained with the finesse of a teacher. Great way of describing it.

They probably didn't have power to pump anything if the power source failed, which probably happened. From what I was told Algiers plant was the only plant that had power in the entire city for a point. People were camped out there in an adjacent yard. I'm almost sure the Carrollton plant was compromised and probably all the drainage stations throughout the city. Most importantly if the power grid failed it would've been a wrap. Just like even now. At full capacity the city only pumps 1 inch an hour and half an inch an hour after that. Just a regular storm could flood the city if that power grid fails that generate power to the pumps. There are back up generators, but they take diesel to run. If no trucks could get in to refuel the diesel generators that's another problem

Storm surge into the lake, through the levees…. With zero place to go and no functioning pumps to get it out…. Or workers to actually get them to work 😭 it was all a mess. I still don’t believe the pumps are working today…. My street in Metairie during our last hurricane, the water was nearly up to my doorstep… with the water flowing like a damn river! I have lived here ten years and it never once flooded on my street, much less up to my door! They are doing messed up things and the next big storm … I just don’t know what’s going to happen. We can’t control things with a 1-2 level anymore much less more!?

I completely understand how you broke that down. My dad from New Orleans and my mom used that same exact example to help me understand what happened.

also, the drains and catch basins probably got clogged due to debris. Meaning any water that came in would not even drain properly to get to any pumps to then be pumped out. People forget there was a tropical storm, Sidney that happened a month before Katrina. It caused widespread damage and debris was still not all picked up from that. There was still brush and tree limbs bundled up for pick up. Which, BTW, also, was the reason some people decided not to leave who could've left. They'd just evacuated, being stuck in contra flow traffic, burning resources etc.
