I use TAP gel. which is basically acrylic but a different material. they do have to use UV light though. so basically they build the nail with the gel and I have tips put on. The only time they ever have to take the nail off is if it is broken. Otherwise, when I get the color changed, they file off the color and the gel nail is still there. My nail is not touched. They fill in the bottom where the new growth is and make it even but the new growth doesn't get filed or messed with. I started doing my nails this way because my natural nails are so brittle and thin and got ripped and shredded constantly. My natural nails are protected now and don't get ripped up and so long as I keep up on it, I rarely have to have a nail replaced, which means hardly any soaking and very little contact with my natural nail.

with acrylic they will fill it instead of taking it off everytime. they will fully take it off eventually, but not every time you go to the salon. (i think, i just get dip)
