ELECTROLYTES ARE MORE THAN JUST SODIUM 🧂 This one’s not for the elite athletes…you go on with your electrolytes, okay? This one’s for the rest of us 😉 As a dietitian, I gotta clear the air: almost zero of us need more sodium. What we do need? More of the other key electrolytes: potassium, magnesium and calcium. Electrolytes are minerals that do exactly what they say: they carry a charge. And these molecules operate in operational pairs in the body…calcium/magnesium and sodium/potassium. I’m gonna really oversimplify here because, attention spans. We need these minerals daily and the balance between these four are responsible for fluid balance in our cells, nerve cell transmission and a bunch of other things like muscle contraction. We eat WAY too much sodium and not nearly enough potassium…sometimes we do alright on calcium, but rarely on magnesium. I just got a product pitch in my inbox today for an electrolyte that contained 5mg calcium, 540mg of potassium and 15mg of sodium with a tiny sprinkle of turmeric. It was 2.50 a DAY. Or 65 a month. 2 tbsp of the hummus I’m eating contains 20mg of calcium, 110mg of sodium. The bread alone contains 90mg of potassium. Plus the tomatoes and the tofu…. TLDR: Don’t let supplement companies sell you nutrients you are already eating! If you’re worried you’re not getting enough of something, don’t guess. Talk to a dietitian. Then eat/supplement in a targeted, efficient way. #dietitiansofinstagram #plantbasednutrition #plantbaseddietitian #electrolytes #evidencebasednutrition
