That's not true you're aloud to claim a year free council tax because your renovating. You need to send photos ect to hmrc. It's the new rules been brought in by the government.

You can apply to have it rated temporarily zero as it’s not liveable. You need to challenge them as they always fight against it (greed)

If you do not have a functioning toilet you do not have to pay council tax - they may send someone over to confirm this

Depends on the council, mine is unoccupied and unfurnished so 0-3 months is 0%, 3-6 months 50% and 6-12 months 100%. If it’s still unoccupied after 12 months then it will double xx

yes the double the council tax if it’s empty for a year and then they moan and say that there is to many empty properties ghat could be renovated and lived in or rented out yet they want to make it harder for people to do that

Super annoying isn’t it 🥲 we are going to have to pay double council tax as no one has lived it for 1 year (we are currently renovating and previous owner passed away meaning it was empty for some time)!

Not really. Each council " makes up its own rules". Mine will spend thousands in court fees to claim back a very small debt.

They used to give you 6 months free if you were doing a major renovation, we had that but that was over 10 years ago!

I’m on double tax. Sucks. You can claim exemption for a year. When I bought my place the sellers had claimed it. They got a few months out of it then I got the rest of the year

It’s council dependant, some allow suspension of council tax in situations like no toilet, some want to increase tax on empty homes if there is a housing shortage. Speak to your council directly

I was renovating from Feb to Dec and then got sent a big bill because I emailed them asking for a discount and dropped myself in it. I was livid as I didn't live there!!
