Those who have endured deep trauma often find themselves responding with surprising calmness during highly stressful events, yet they may react strongly to situations that seem trivial. High levels of stress can lead to a disconnection in their minds, resulting in numbness and dissociation. In contrast, when stress is low, their emotions tend to emerge in a more direct and unfiltered way. When an individual experiences a traumatic event, their brain and body respond in a primal, survival-oriented manner. The sympathetic nervous system kicks in, releasing stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which prepare the body to either fight or flee from the perceived threat. This response is designed to be short-term, allowing the individual to react quickly and effectively to the immediate danger. However, when the traumatic event is severe, prolonged, or repetitive, the brain and body may adapt by developing a coping mechanism known as dissociation. Dissociation is a disconnection between the individual's thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations, allowing them to temporarily escape the overwhelming emotional pain and distress associated with the traumatic experience.
