5e is the illusion of choice and the illusion of mechanics

Please play with these systems in your regular 5e game. Enforce sleeping in tents and ammunition and rations. Worry about light and hydration and all that stuff. Genuinely it flips a switch in the players' brains that puts them into the world more.

The DMs guide SPECIFICALLY has a passage about tailoring which rules you use to your group to tell the best story. It’s about knowing your group, not following the letter of the law

This basically means anyone that does care has to rewrite the rules. Carrying weight does matter cuz it teaches you to think about carts and porters.

I run a highschool D&D club, I had a player quit after 1 session because I focused too much on story telling and my style of DMing didn't allow him to min/max as effectively as he would like.

I disagree with the way you see the extra rules. DnD is supposed to be used like a system such as GURPS and BRP where you pick and choose the rules to create the game you want to play.

Encumbereds is a bad example, it makes strength not a dump stat, because if you need to actually carry items, you have to have someone with good strength. Otherwise strength is objectively worse dexterity.

and then they make classes/subclasses that are built around some of these, to the point that whole features are write-offs, until later publishers or UA comes and fixes them.

It is 100% actually just that fans of D&D streamers, who are generally improv pros that disregard rules in favor of drama/comedy, think that paying attention to the rules are for smelly nerds. Mechanics are fun. They’re what makes it an actual game instead of just storytelling.

because DND is always been a guide line not a pure rule set.

5e is funny because it has so many rules for things that barely come up, and when they finally do… it’s just easier and faster to come up with your own rules on the spot rather than look through the book in the middle of session

Part of my planning for a campaign is choosing which rules matter for that style of game; if I'm not doing a survival game, I'm not gonna bother with the foraging rules. I also ask my players what kind of things they're interested in within the context of the game world. If I have no puzzlers in my party, there aren't gonna be many puzzles.
Also, this video is too funny to me as context for the argument; like, if the only tool you have is welding torch, you're doing something wrong.

my least favorite part about this is some classes have abilities or spells specifically for these rules that arent used making the class unbelievably underwhelming and not fun to play

That's why I can't stand 5e. No danger, no survival, no exploration and wild ass classes. Like cool a hoppo, a tree woth fairies and a goblin walk into a town yeah that makes sense. Why couldn't you carry 15 great axes sure go ahead. Food and shelter? got a spell for it no danger or risk needed.

5e dumbed a lot down, it's extremely easy and guard railed from previous editions. The Major benefit from that is you avoid the multi classing and prestige classing hell of 3.5e, but you take a lot of the cleverness out of playing the rules.

scared by the backlash from 4e.....gee I wonder why maybe because 4e was throwing everything away and making a new version that was poorly balanced to the point of making it a hack n slash game system

dnd isn't a well made game it's played by fun people who make it fun people need to see that and try some new systems that work better for other styles of play

sigh, the rules exist for when the situation demands it. traveling a desert? do one calculation at the start and knock off supplies as you travel. use the rules when they would be interesting

DnD is the worst system even when just Compared against other medieval fantasy systems, it's a game whose existing rules sucks and expect the GM to fix all the existing problems themselves (Such as CR/Spells/Skills/Item Rarities/Gold Economy/ect)

the problem is that 5e players don't know even the rules that matter like movement and action economy

These rules are for flavor: there’s a background that lets you get food from the forest for free, and the encumbrance matters for low strength charcter, it gives the rogue a challenge for when he is trying to steal things.

this is one of the reasons I switched over to 2e and never looked back. Rules modularity is built into the system, and the non combat rules are actually good to begin with
