Ottokar Nováček (1866–1900) was an Austro-Hungarian violinist and composer of Czech descent, best known for the piece performed in this clip - Perpetuum Mobile (composed in 1895). Nováček studied in Vienna and Leipzig, where he won the Mendelssohn Prize in 1885. He performed in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Brodsky Quartet before emigrating to the United States, where he played with the Boston Symphony and Damrosch Orchestra. A heart condition forced his early retirement, after which he focused on composition. He died in New York City at the age of 33. Nathan Milstein (1904–1992) was a Russian-American violinist widely considered one of the greatest of the 20th century. Born in Odessa, he studied with Pyotr Stolyarsky and later with Leopold Auer in St. Petersburg. Milstein also studied with Eugène Ysaÿe and was a lifelong friend of pianist Vladimir Horowitz. He made his American debut in 1929 with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski and became a U.S. citizen in 1942. Milstein was known for his interpretations of Bach and Romantic repertoire, his long career, and his own compositions and transcriptions, including Paganiniana. He was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1968 and the Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance in 1975. We hope you enjoy this clip of Nathan Milstein performing Nováček’s Perpetuum mobile and strongly encourage you to listen to the full recording online.
