I cannot understand why police officers aren’t required to learn the law. It seems like a basic part of their job. They should have to take law classes so they know what they are enforcing.

Great job helping out. It would be also awesome if you submitted this to local precinct police office. They actually try to respond to a lot of these instances (i have a similar issue with them just using a CVS as a break area always).

EDIT: (more details) The first cop tried kicking Greg out claiming he had to have a permit to perform. Greg pulled out the code outlining how permits are only needed if he had an amp, which he doesn’t. Then the cop changed his reason for kicking him out to claiming that Greg was gonna be too loud over the announcements. Greg said he’d be pausing for the announcements. That’s when I asked what was happening because how are you gonna ticket someone/kick them out for something you THINK they’re going to do? Then Greg played, pausing during announcements, while the 3 cops hovered and stared him down. When the 2 additional cops came, they repeated the reasons the first cop gave. When that didn’t work, THAT’S when they claimed (for the first time) that he was obstructing the walkway. If it was such a problem, why wasn’t that the first thing you said? It was so obvious they were just on an ego/power trip trying to find some way to kick him out.

This takes me back — years ago, a busker friend of mine went through the same thing. NYPD arrested him for playing in the subway. He sued…and won. The whole thing went viral back in 2015.

Late to this but there will be a bottle neck of people that have to move around him when trains drop off passengers. He’s in the path by about 2 feet, doesn’t seem like much but it causes slowdown. Rules are there for a reason
