for me there's no good ending. however, in my mind maelle's ending is canon because no way verso beats her in a 1v1 duel

The future of lumiere is more important than any individual life and that includes verso's.

As a mental health therapist, it was clear that Maelle’s ending was the worse ending because subcumming to your grief and submerging yourself in vices is farrr worse than reconnecting your family and bringing your family back together

People who act like Verso’s ending is “objectively better” are annoying and pretentious. They both have pros yet I don’t regret choosing Maelle’s because I don’t think the people of Lumiere’s lives are any less deserving of being lived just because they were created. If we wokeup today and found out we were in a painting that doesn’t make my own experiences any less real to me and I wouldn’t want the plug to be pulled for the sake of the people above.

is it? I think you are making assumptions. The canvas already surpass Verso's life and it can possibly surpass Maelle. If we are falling into assumptions maybe their family join Maelle in her grief after 67+ canvas years have passed and they make a deal with her to preserve Verso's canvas in his memory. Maelle is risking her life not because of her grief but also because she saw a world worth saving. Okay, maybe Maelle is creating a new cycle by bringing them back but in her perspective is doing justice for sentient people who was taken down just because of what Renoir think is best for her family forcing everyone in his view of how to overcome grief. For me Maelle's ending adds the possibility of preserving both Dessedre and the canvas. Verso's ending is just unfair for everything and everyone we all knew at the start of the game. For as far we know staying in the canvas for a period of time is not dangerous you can already outlive any human life of +67 canvas years and be okay, a perfectly amount of time to make a new deal (not a genocidal one)

I think it's highly dependent on how the reader interprets the characters of the painting. Are they fully sentient, or are they figments of a very traumatized person's imagination. If you think they are sentient you'll prefer maelle's ending. If you think the traumatized person needs to "wake up" you'll prefer Verso's

I dislike the Verso ending because it just doesn't make sense to me. The game builds the real Verso as a compassionate and selfless person, someone who is willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of others. But the Verso ending just completely ignores all of that.

The thing no one brings up is that Maelle could always paint a new canvas in Verso's ending after moving on from her grief. She can make a new Lumiere with everyone in it, and to those who say, "its not the same people", remember everyone got wiped by Renoir at the end of act 2, so by the time you have the choice, no one is the same person that you started with.

Maelles ending literally has her controlling the world as its new twisted God, wallowing in her grief and refusing to move on. a tortured immortal verso forced to play on stage for a fake crowd, endlessly exhausted and furious. it's just denial. she'd rather play pretend then grow up

If you kill someone with your reckless actions but have the magical power to return their life to them "well, they were gonna die eventually anyway" is a bad excuse not to do so and is morally reprehensible.

There’s no “good” ending. Each person is in a different place in their grief. In grief there is just sorrow and how we end up managing it. But there’s loss regardless.

If you think Maelle’s ending is in any way a good ending, you didn’t understand the themes and message of the game. You can’t change my mind

Maelle is literally the puppet master in her ending. Forcing Verso to continue living against his will and it’s starting to kill her just as it was her mother. Who in their right mind would consider that the good ending?!

Counterpoint: the painters are essentially gods. Is it right for a god to abandon the world they created? What if our world is a painting? Wouldn't we fight to keep it?

There is no good ending & the game makes it clear that there won't be. I understand why Maelle clings to the happiness she had in Lumière but the whole canvas is nothing but a monument of grief the Dessendre family is bound to.

I would argue no one inside the painting is alive to begin with, just as the characters from E33 (or any videogame) aren't alive. No matter how convincing they might be. That's the whole point, the canvas is just opium for a family who is struggling with grief.

This! The Maelle ending is the choice to delay the inevitable, it is not a happy ending. The Devs have made it clear that there is no real good ending its just a choice of rather you value the people of the painting getting some more time or weather you value the completion of the cycle of grief and allowing for the Dessandre family to finally move on from Verso's death.

Maelles ending is "she's choosing herself over others she's only thinking of what she wants rather than others, verso wants to be let go and she won't let him because she needs him and she doesn't like what she's become in the real world

both endings are not exactly good endings miles ending is basically you're just choosing to live in a fantasy instead of accepting the harsh truth while verso is basically you coming to terms with our own grief so you can move on with your own life :/ sorry I'm not much of a video game analyst :/
