The air traffic control tower at Hollywood Burbank Airport in California was forced to shut down Monday afternoon due to staffing shortages caused by the ongoing government shutdown. A pilot preparing for takeoff was informed over the radio that the tower was closed because of staffing issues. Federal data shows at least twelve FAA facilities across the country experienced staffing shortages Monday night. At Burbank, the tower went dark at 4:15 p.m. local time, leaving pilots to use small-airport procedures to coordinate takeoffs and landings. In radio exchanges, one pilot asked, “You said you were closing 4:15?” and the controller confirmed, “Affirmative. For staffing.” Another exchange captured disbelief from a pilot who asked, “You’re gonna close or something?” to which the controller replied, “The tower will be closed for staffing. We reopen at 10:00 p.m. local.” With no controllers on duty, Burbank operated under “ATC zero” conditions, resulting in delays of more than two hours. Similar staffing issues were reported at towers and radar centers in Phoenix, Denver, Newark, Jacksonville, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Indianapolis. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the number of controllers calling out sick has increased since the start of the shutdown, adding that many are worried about paying their mortgages and car payments. “Do I think they’re more stressed right now in our towers? Yes,” Duffy said. “Is our airspace unsafe? No.” During the shutdown, he said, the government will do what is necessary to keep the airspace safe.
