@tinyheartseducation: Being a paramedic shaped how I parent my kids and this one is such an easy one to teach your kids from an early age. No high five, no swimming. 86% of drownings happen when a parent is present meaning little ones silently slip away and enter the water without a parent knowing or watching. This rule means that’s impossible. I also say it needs to be me or my husband they high five.
also if everyone is watching the kid no one is watching the kid

As an instructor, the first step of each session is the kid has to ask an adult for permission to go in the pool

I get it but like it doesn’t feel 100 percent like kids forget things I mean we all forget things

Also keep in mind , that kids will forget and go in anyway . Watch your kids ! No matter how much we drill it into them , they WILL disobey not intentionally .

My mom’s rule was let the driver tell you to go. With their eyes or a hand gesture. And she meant EVERY CAR. I’d wait until either all stopped or made a gesture I love her for that. She had no problem discipline me if I ever just crossed with her. She’d say you’ll end up in a wheelchair for life if you just run and don’t look both ways. A car is HEAVY.

Also. Buy your child a bright swimsuit.
We do bright pinks, yellow and orange in our house.

My social worker & paramedic parents had a rule we couldn’t get in the water unless one of them was already in and gave a thumbs-up, i still automatically look for it before swimming 😂

This is amazing! 👏 I am so lucky my kids have been around a pool and water since day dot (family home has an in ground pool). Good habits start early! Little tricks to keep them safe! We always have two people around. If not in the pool. Sometimes one for each kiddie and we swap who’s watching who!
