Lawrence Waigwa :
How Marxism Relates to the Current Generation
1. Inequality & Wealth Gap
Billionaires and corporations control huge wealth while most young people struggle with unemployment, student loans, or low-paying jobs.
Marxism explains this as the natural outcome of capitalism where the rich (bourgeoisie) exploit the working class (proletariat).
2. Gig Economy & Job Insecurity
Many youths work on short-term contracts, freelancing apps, or delivery platforms with little stability.
Marxists argue this is “modern exploitation,” where workers don’t own what they produce and are easily disposable.
3. Climate Crisis
Capitalism values profit over sustainability, leading to overproduction, pollution, and global warming.
Marxism highlights how endless pursuit of profit destroys both people and the planet.
4. Global South vs. Global North
Developing countries often provide cheap labor and raw materials for wealthy nations.
Marxists call this neo-colonialism, showing how capitalism continues global exploitation.
5. Youth Activism
From climate protests (e.g., Fridays for Future) to labor union organizing, many young people are reviving Marxist-inspired ideas without always calling them “Marxism.”
Social justice, feminism, anti-racism, and equality movements often echo Marxist thought about power and oppression.
