@laurabyrnesintheworld: Replying to @stevec571 Part 2 of my visit to #herculaneum archeological site - saw two villas that have been closed to the public for years for restoration, as well as the temple of Augustus Deified #ancientrome #archeology #vesuvius #ancientsites

I can so imagine the house decorated, a giant canopy bed, with little tables scattered around, incense burning, some pitchers of wine, long silk curtains, vibrant paintings, statues of gods, some music, the sounds of water in the pool. So beautiful

It's incredible that the Roman's actually had Vacation homes and then you look at how horrible the middle ages was that followed.

This so amazing! If we did construction like this now, our homes would last forever and be fire proof 💜💜💜

As a cook, I may be wrong because I'm not a historian, but where those tiles were placed almost tells me for foot pain while standing cooking! we have foam mats now that help, but I saw those and actually thought that would be really nice to stretch a sore foot on if you had to stand there for hours cooking. Either for well taken care of slaves or maybe the house owners may have been in to cooking themselves.

Wonderful video! I don't think I've seen that first place you show in this video. Great job covering the things you did. One small correction is that the wood from Pompeii didn't necessarily burn, I'm sure some did but most of it just decomposed as all organic material does. Unless it's carbonized or buried the way Herculaneum was which would block oxygen from reaching the wood(this enabling decomposition)

I want a house like this. Open, hearth in the center, just that overall sense of home radiating. It would be so beautiful and cool and much better than the drab we have nowadays.

I was not prepared to see how worn those steps to the second story were. How long was this villa in use? It must have been well-loved by generations.

I wonder if the humps were a sort of "non-slip" surface? I mean, the probably didn't care about the comfort of the slaves and kitchens are notoriously slip zones.

And I’d be sitting right in that room every time it rained just to relax, listening to that rain fall out of those spouts down to the pool below.
