@scientificamerican: Last summer, our Chief Multimedia Editor Jeffery DelViscio visited the East Greenland Ice-Core Project. Scientists working at this camp spent months at a time drilling to pull up ancient ice cores that reveal mysteries of our climate history. But even polar researchers need snacks — so Jeff and camp chef/medical doctor Astrid Duus Mikkelsen head to the supermarket… buried under the ice. 🔗 Listen to Jeff recount his polar trek on Science Quickly. 🎤 Astrid Duus Mikkelsen, Jeffery DelViscio 🎥 Jeffery DelViscio 🎞️ Kylie Murphy #greenland #Science #climate #arctic
Supermarkets in Greenland aren’t actually free—but I can see where the confusion might come from. Greenland has a unique system designed to make essential goods more accessible, especially in remote areas. Here’s what’s really going on:
Government Support: Greenland’s government contracts companies like Pilersuisoq to ensure that essential items—like food staples, medicine, and personal care products—are available at consistent prices across the country, even in isolated villages A.
Price Equalization: If a store runs out of an essential item and it has to be flown in, the customer still pays the same price. The company absorbs the extra transport cost
Public Service Mission: These stores aren’t focused on profit. Their goal is to maintain fair access to necessities, which can make shopping there feel unusually affordable compared to other places
