I love how Matt Mercer will sometimes make somebody roll a random intelligence check when he feels the party is missing something. It allows him to give a little clue without being to obvious about it

Fails to solve puzzle, then proceeds to make a friend out of an ordinary, adamant object. This was not a npc. This wasn’t anything, but now they want the candlestick that was on the desk (a normal candlestick) to be their friend… ok, sure. And now you want to find a potion to bring “your friend” to life? Um, yeah.. alright. (Spends the next week throwing a twist into their new plot. The candlestick they bring to life is evil. It’s going to be their next bad guy… Beauty and the Beast songs will play during their battle.)

I never make players roll for the clue. I make them roll for things that help them understand the clue. No point softlocking stuff because of RNG. give them a chance and make the better clue be behind the roll.

once I solved a puzzle bc I was trying to mess w the villagers, but no one in the party realized. so we also came up w this elaborate scheme that banded together literally the whole village to try to open this door, and then it just opened itself bc I had Done The Thing

I set up a whole session around a very simple riddle, the difficult bit is earn pieces of the riddle then putting it together, they managed that super quick but the riddle i wrote to be super simple they got completely wrong

I was running a 1 shot (actually like 2 or 3 games) and after multiple successful attempts the party discovered the hidden door the BBEG was going to use to escape. they went up the secret passage and attacked while he was preparing something (i dont remember what now). so they were able to beat the game before the main villain even did what they were going to

Serious advice for people whose players solve puzzles 'too quickly': create puzzles that still require the players to do something active once they've figured out the solution. Example: I made a dungeon where the boss was behind a secret door built into a magic mirror in the main room. Observant PCs could notice that a few objects were in different places in the reflection than reality, and some were missing entirely. Those items were scattered throughout the rest of the dungeon, behind small combat encounters and traps. My players knew what they needed to do immediately, but then they still had to actually do it and that was the meat of the game for that session.
