A man in Florida who murdered a woman pregnant with his child was sentenced to death on Friday (October 10). Jose Soto-Escalera, 48, has been in jail since 2018, after Tania Wise was found dead in a roadside drainage ditch on Aug. 24, 2018, in rural St. Lucie County. Wise, 23, was eight months pregnant with Soto-Escalera’s child, whom she planned to name Josiah Wise. Soto-Escalera was married at the time and gave her $500 that he wanted her to use to get an abortion, but she kept the money instead. Judge Lawrence Mirman in Florida's 19th Judicial Circuit announced the sentence after hearing evidence and argument following a jury's 8-4 vote to recommend a death sentence.
