Probably because you are still taking them places. Next time they wanna go somewhere look them dead in the eye and say well if you had your license you could go.

I'm asking the same thing, my 18 yr old says he is scared to drive. and no, he's never been in a wreck or anything like that. no clue. won't even take the permit test either. I was driving down dirt roads at 12.

Starts with the parents, my kid turning 8 and when I pick him up from his grandma house around the corner I let him get the wheel and always coach him and tell him the importance of driver license and recently he keeps asking me if he can get his drivers license and how he can’t wait! You said it in lots of videos, starts at home with the parents.

1. Kids have happy homes now.
2. Kids have tons of ways to connect with friends not in person.
3. Kids don't have third places anymoew.
4. We have life360 as parents now cause we know.
5. Cars are expensive.
6. Insurance is too expensive for many parents.

Well for some. Their parents can’t afford the insurance so they don’t allow it.

Because we didn’t have group video games or face time. If we wanted to see our friends we had to get in a car and go see them. No they can lay in their bed and see them. And when they do drive it’s for a purpose so they see it as a chore. Not a fun get out of the house thing.

why? its not treated like a right of passage. American culture really doesnt have them anymore. parents do everything for their kids. its also really expensive and kids can contact their friends virtually. so what's the point?

To go where with what? There are no 3rd spaces for teenagers. The cost of a used vehicle is mind-boggling, and insurance for a teen, especially a boy, is astronomical. My first car cost $300, I could pay a years worth of insurance with a summer job, and baby sit a few days a month for gas money. I could then take said car to the mall and hang out with friends, go to the movies and pay $4 to see the new release.

In 1982 I was 12 years old. My parents owned their own auto repair shop and I drove cars in and out of the shop now today that would be a huge problem with insurance but, nonetheless, I was allowed to do it and I learned how to drive cars. prior to that I was driving Farm equipment at my grandfather‘s farm at 8….. no I know that’s not everyone’s normal situation but that was mine and I couldn’t wait until I became 16 to drive on the streets. At 18 in 1988 I acquired a cdl from Texas to drive a tow truck and at that time Houston Texas had their own requirements and I had to go get a license from them as well.

1. No more Driver's Training classes in school.
2. Cost of lessons.
3. Provisional licenses can't drive around their friends. My son will have to keep a permission letter in the car just to drive his brother to school. Many don't see the point.

Because a car payment + license + registration + insurance +emissions + (property taxes on vehicles in some states) are absolutely unaffordable now for young people. Why TF would these kids want to drive?

Kids don’t have to deal with what we did. If we wanted to see our friends we had to walk or bike the miles to see then we could not call half our friends because back then everything was long distance besides our small town.

We saw it as freedom, kids today see it as responsibility. And they don't want that.
