@kylaleelawyer: Please @Shaiie_Foeva keep sentencing people for my entertainment but also to prove my legal point. #Potluck #DeathRow.

So let’s follow the logic then. Why are any custodial sentences required at ALL if longer sentences don’t deter crime? Why have ANY punishment?

good let them continue to commit crime in jail. convict them lengthen the sentence. get rid of time off for time served x2 x3. 2/3 served and you get out.the only time anything close to a real sentence is handed out is if it involves a cop a politician or judge. killer Karla is perfect example

A bit misleading in my opinion: harsher sentences don’t have much affect on general deterrence (ie deterring other potential offenders), but it does affect the individual criminal at least for a period of time and protects society for at least that period of time. It also satisfies principles of justice that are important to most Canadians. I think we need harsh but fair sentences for very serious crimes, but could re-assess the necessity for less serious offences - our courts can’t handle the volume anyways.

I believe in restitution for a lot of the crimes committed. I’m not a big fan of putting the guy in jail that stole my car. What I’d rather see is him/her pay me back for the replacement cost of my vehicle. Putting them in jail actually costs me money. Pay me back. It’ll help with their mental health, make them feel better about themselves, give them purpose and help with there habilitation that they need. I believe it’s a win for all. 👍

It’s pretty hard for someone to commit a crime while incarcerated. In Canada, we have catch and release and that’s not working either. I was told 70% of the crimes are committed by habitual criminals. I’d like to see what longer incarceration would look like.

We should distinguish the fact that violent crimes should have much higher sentencing rates than right now. If you kill some you might get 5 years but if you launder money you get over 15 years at least!? That doesn’t make sense. People should be first and I don’t mean the violent offenders.

At the extreme then why is there punishment at all. If it’s not a deterrent then why punish them. Of course that’s insane but the point is that not being a deterrent is a bad arguement for how much punishment you get.

It could be argued that there's a point of diminishing returns on sentencing deterrence, but it could also be argued that excessively light sentences act as a dismissal that any 'wrongdoing' had occurred. If feels to me that the balance is tipping towards not being held accountable, especially with property crimes.

How would a traffic lawyer know this? I’d rather hear from an actual criminal defence lawyer. Not a lawyer who practices on the bottom rung of the legal system hierarchy.

Harsher sentences do reduce crime from the person serving the sentence. The 80/20 rule applies, it’s a minority of prolific offenders in the DTES generating a ton of police contacts. Keeping them locked up longer will have a measurable impact on public safety.

Longer sentences deter that individual from recidivism - while they're behind bars. 🙂

I want longer sentences for repeat offenders not to change them. Not to fix them. But to keep them from committing continuous crimes. It’s for the law abiding public not the criminal.
