Unfortunately baby cottontails are extremely difficult to keep alive. Their GI tract is so delicate and their bodies do not respond well to being handled

He should be big enough to be on his own. Most mother rabbits will actually leave the nest and let the babies fend for themselves after a certain age; so if you find a stray one, it is typically because the mama has left already.
