Heavy bag fundamentally is never used for foot work - if you want that, do actual footwork drills and pad work drills prioritising angles. Heavy bag creates bad habits in footwork especially when trying to learn distance.

Gotta do it old school karate style. Get him in his most comfortable stance, and have him throw 20 jabs, then 20 rights, but maintaining his stance. Probably 3 sets before and after class.
And then obviously footwork drills

Tie a shoestring around both shoes and have him in that stance while he’s throwing it’ll also help him have a consistent level of power through all of his shots and be in a better defensive position because he’s gonna get more aware of where his feet are placed

Goblet squats, also when they r doing bagwork make them wear a elastic band around their waist and you pull on the other end of the band. I used this a lot to improve my power and stability

not an expert, but it might help to try combos that hit very low, and very high. that way your body needs to change levels and might help with the stance

Say “keep your hips more forward so it’s easier to shift your momentum when you are putting pressure on the bag.”
