The period during which Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao ruled China covers 23 years from 1989 to 2012. Over that period they grew the Chinese economy from $350 billion to $8.5 trillion. That is a 24-fold increase in 23 years. Population increased by 20% over that period, but that still represents a 20-fold increase in per capita GDP. To anyone in China who lived through that period the increase in the material living standards of everyday people and the re-emergence of China as a great economic, industrial, technological and military superpower, it must seem like a miracle. I can’t think of any other period in human history where the lives of so many people have been improved so much, so quickly.

I'm Danish. My current prime minister is a professional politician who has never held a job outside of politics. Her predecessors for as long as I can remember have all been surgically attached to politicians. None of them have any accomplishments or experience outside of politics. I don't miss any of the old ones, I don't respect any of them and when I look at the people our oh-so-democratic system gives me to choose from as future leaders, none of them seem like someone who should be trusted with anything. The Chinese are lucky to have leaders who actually do good things for them.
