It bears mentioning that I was in a state of constant shame and anxiety because of my failure to academically perform for YEEEEEEAAAARS and yet. I did not correct these behaviors until I was in college.

I always say I was the student teachers "hated to love". I was engaged (when it interested me), asked pertinent questions, aced tests, but absolutely refused to do homework. I graduated high school by the skin of my teeth; including teachers agreeing to give me a C for the semester if I just turned in my work by the last day and taking summer and night school to retake failed classes.

good god it is so painfully hard to learn adhd coping mechanisms from scratch, and they're usually cobbled together garbage solutions. they just would not diagnose girls with adhd back then and get us the help we needed 😭

Do the homework WHILE the teacher is lecturing. Get scolded for working ahead. Pick up a book instead. Get yelled at for reading.

I had the bizarre experience of failing a class even though I had the highest grade on all the tests because I didn't do my homework. One test, literally every other person in the class failed, I got a 95.

Why didn’t I do the homework? Because the sheer amount of repetitive busy work felt insurmountable and it would 100% be boring and not teach me anything new. Why would I waste my time on ideas I knew before I went to class when there were fantasy novels to read??

I was also a lockerless kid who forgot to do homework and never lived up to potential 😆😭 One year I forgot my lunch in my locker, then forgot my combination. They did eventually tell me my locker combination when it started to smell. I was mortified but at least I got it back for a few days

This is such a believable tween/teen story! I had a violin student who forgot to bring their lesson books for at least three months in a row! They liked violin, and we successfully made it past that hurdle, but it was interesting going for a bit there!
