He was working both sides. Former Confederate and trying to rebuild in reconstruction. Lincoln was dead. Reconstruction plans was in Congress plans. Could have been anyone. The KKK started up also.

I believe Hindman may have been caught up in the commissioning of Quantrill a captain. Although supposedly the confederacy did not want to claim Quantrill a soldier. He acted on his own raiding and killing. Hindmans dealings regarding Quantrill on both sides could be what got him killed
