The Quran :

Shaykh al islam ibn taymiyyah in his majmu al fatawa split sufism into 3 categories: The first type of sufi is in the linguistic sense, I.e someone who has zuhd (asceticism).Someone who doesn't care about the worldly life and only cares about the deen and the hereafter (I.e someone extremely pious) Also someone that does not engage in biddah and khurrafat (I.e extreme stories of miracles that contradict the sunnah and the quran like "my shaykh said if u visit his grave u will be free from hell" etc). Pertaining to this type of sufism or tassawuf even athari imams can be described with it for e.g shaykh ibn uthaymeen was known to be a great worshipper of allah day and night. But we still don't like using the term sufi to describe ourselves because sufism has been hijacked by people of innovation and desires. Which leads me to the 2nd and 3rd category sufism, which is full of biddah and nonsense, (e.g sufis shaykh ibn arabi saying allah worships me) This type of sufism is considered misguided and shaykh al islam used to warn against it in his books (e.g rad al bakri, tawwasul wal waseela, majmu al fatawa etc) 2nd type of sufism is full of innovations and the 3rd category is the 2nd category but way worse in their innovations for e.g the sufi shaykh ibn arabi statment of "allah worships me" would come under this 3rd category.
