I had the privilege of running alongside Tatay Ruben (Queruben Abella) today, a 76-year-old runner. At one point he asked me, ‘Pila na ta ka oras nagdagan, dai?’ I answered, ‘1 hour and 44 minutes na ta, Tay.’ Then he followed, ‘Pila na ta ka kilometro?’ I replied, ‘14.64 na Tay, gamay na lang.’ With a smile he simply said, ‘Ahhh, pito na lang.’My heart was both happy and humbled. At 76, with no watch, in his favorite old shoes, he runs powered only by grit, faith, and pure love for the sport.
