@drzagefit: Retirement isn’t what most people think it is. I believe staying active and engaged is the real key to a long, healthy life — sitting back and stopping doesn’t cut it. Disagree, I retired at 55 and fill my days with the self care I could never do while working. My days are spent working out, eating healthy, cycling. I’m more fulfilled now than ever.

I've never heard of anyone, on their deathbed, wishing they had worked more.

I retired from corporate last year at 60 and agree with your analysis. I see it too in other retirees who have become sedentary. You need to find your new purpose, be disciplined in staying physically active and enjoy life at a retired pace.

The other cohort he doesn’t see is the ones that die of a heart attack from stress.

As someone with a sedentary desk job, I feel I’d be more active once I can retire because I wouldn’t be chained to the computer all day.

Disagree. You’re not seeing many of us earlier retirees because we don’t have health problems and never go to the doctor.

As a physical therapist for 32 years who works in Home Health, I totally agree. I see retired people that mostly sit in a recliner all day and watch TV and aren’t sharp and have generally poor health. You should at least work part time.

When I retired last year my physical, mental and cognitive health improved dramatically. I finally have time and energy to exercise and vacation. When I was working I had no energy left to take care of myself. My LDL has finally gone down after 15 yrs. I don’t wake up stressed and grouchy. Not interested in any work other than taking care of me!

My sister was a surgeon- got ALS and and passed in her -50s- never had a chance to enjoy herself as her job was so demanding. I hope to retire in 60s, volunteer, read run, camp and live

I retired this January at 63, was getting more and more work dumped on me due to layoffs, and was averaging 55 to 60 hours a week with regular travel, the pace was dramatically increasing due to high demand for my skills, wasn’t able to keep up as I was doing 3 people’s jobs, so was not the direction I wanted. When the company offered early retirement I took it. Now Every single day I exercise, I walk 2.5 miles in the morning, go to gym to do 45 minutes of hard hitting strength training, then bike, and swim afterwards, and a few nights a week of pickleball. Feel great, losing weight, gaining muscle, and going on 5 to 6 vacations a year. My goal is to complete my bucket list before my health deteriorates. I try to keep my mind sharp by staying current in my field of technology and doing some day trading and investments. Definitely not sitting around the house!

HR here: your patient Steve has a lawsuit. There’s no mandatory retirement in financial services.

What you say is evidence based but we’re in an era where people don’t care about evidence - just look at this comment section. There’s a trend right now to aspire to not work, or aspire to a “soft life” with no challenge or struggle. It’s a “grass is greener” situation. People don’t realise that having no work is eventually not good for most people. It doesn’t need to be paid work. But solving problems and communicating with people keeps your brain healthy and work is one of the main ways we do that in a way that actually challenges us

You don’t have to “work” to stay sharp. You can advise, sit on boards, read more, give back to the community, exercise more, etc.

Hell no I retired at 59. I walk 3 miles a day, eat healthy and educate myself. Life is to short and the younger generation love to discriminate.

You need to have a purpose in life, but it sure as heck doesn’t have to be your 9-5. Volunteer, workout, hobbies, travel. There’s a million things to do. Can’t wait.

It’s very dependent on your relationship status, income and age. I’m traveling the world asap because I can- and I know the sands in my hourglass aren’t guaranteed. Plus I have a great wife. Working kills people- why would I stay there for as long as possible?
