There is a joke that goes: An American businessman goes to a fisherman in Cadiz (or whenever, I have heard it with various locations), the American asks what he does and he answers "I, fish for a couple of hours, I sell the fish, I go home I eat a homemade meal with my wive, I play with my children and then I spend the evening at the bar eating tapas with friends" The American says "that is great, but you know if you spend more time fishing you could buy a bigger boat", "Why?" "Because then you could catch more fish and make more money" "What for?" "So then you could hire some more people, even sell internationally and make more money" "And?" "So then after years of hard work you could retire, fish for a couple hours, eat a homemade meal with your wife, okay with your grandchildren and spend the evenings eating tapas with your friends"

Exactly. I have a difficult time with deep cleaning because I’m visually impaired. It’s not laziness, it’s frustration at the lack of results after hours of work.

Being lazy is doing nothing despite having a skillset. I don’t think playing the guitar and earning no money is lazy (it’s not productive though)

"You chose not to, so clearly you couldn't have. if you could have, you would have done it" is a way of thinking I don't really get and it feels like a dangerous mindset. Is it impossible for someone to be capable of something but choose not to do it? If we can dismiss laziness as nonexistent because people are at the mercy of external circumstance, doesn't the same logic hold true for right and wrong? Perhaps a murderer is just as much a victim of circumstance who shouldn't be faulted for their actions because they couldn't have taken any other path. After all, if they could have chosen to abstained from murder, they would have.

working hard, contributing financially to society, and slaving away for corporate overlords are very recent capitalist ideas. The wealthy created this propaganda as they were looking the commons so that people would compete and look down on each other

I have had undiagnosed narcolepsy since childhood (diagnosed at 21). My whole life I was being accused of being lazy, even failing college for "lack of attendance" sleeping in class with perfect grades. People still think I'm lazy when my brain doesn't sleep while I'm unconscious. I'm always the same level of tired as someone who hasn't slept for two days, with all the same symptoms from the moment I wake up. I medically cannot take the required medications to be healthy, or fully functional. I had a friend who passed away and some accused him of being lazy when he was secretly dying. Some of us want more than anything to be the hardworking person expected of us, but are not able. Some disabilities are invisible, and just as limiting as being in a wheelchair.

Honestly, depends. Bottom line, I think until humanity reaches the point, where everyone can do only things they like and robots can do the rest for them, the conventional definition of laziness is useful. We currently need people who can force themselves to do work they need to do — simply because there is a lot of work very small amount of people wants to do and this work is essential for society to function. We need people to cope with mental distress, overstep their wants — that's why we elevate them as hardworking and opposite of it is called lazy. In future, I hope we will come to your definition of lazy to be viable

can I just have people bring me problems / questions and I provide the answer or how to get it? 30 years of doing the work across all of IT is enough.

a small correction, there is no such thing as Judeo-Christian beliefs. there are Abrahamic beliefs and there are Christian, Jewish, and Islamic beliefs. what you are describing is Christian beliefs. Jewish beliefs are different. it's a politically-motivated construct that obscures the fundamental differences between the two religions and excludes other faiths like Islam.

I think part of it is that "lazy" has been equated with "selfish." People get angry when they perceive someone is lazy because they aren't "pulling their weight," even if this assessment is broad and nebulous at best. My general approach to this is that unless I'm actively making things harder for someone else, any lack of effort on my part is my business and my business alone.

I do think lazy exists… but it’s when you have responsibility and ability, and choose not to. Like when parents don’t care for their children by choice- the fact they didn’t isn’t proof they couldn’t. I do agree that most things called lazy, are just people struggling to cope tho.

Very insightful. Also think there's far too many "I have suffered, so therefore everyone else (*especially* those I deem 'lesser') should have to as well" mentalities out there, and not nearly enough "I have suffered, and I don't want *anyone* else to have to go through that if it can at all be helped."

this is a pretty good summary of the book "laziness does not exist" in case anyone is interested in reading that to get into these ideas more

This is the first time i heard this take, but i have to agree so hard. Every single time in my life where i was called lazy or thought of myself as being lazy can be explained by things. Most of those by my depression, my gender dysphoria, the fact that i'm probably not neurotypical and my social anxiety

This! I’m disabled because I was legally traumatized on the job, and then retraumatized will finding work. Been spending the past 3ish years trying my hardest to heal and find work I can do, all while feeling lazy because of my healthy coping mechanismsa

Ok I do mostly agree but I do think some level of work should be put on every persons shoulders for the betterment of society. Thing is if this work load was spread evenly among all humans who could physically do this work no one would work enough to be burnt out. I think way too much pressure and work is put on the shoulders of the lower class
