I was recently guiding a workshop for a highly successful, world renowned sports team. The head coach had asked me to speak about overcoming adversity. I asked the team to raise their hand if they’re going through some adversity right now. Every single hand in the room went up. I asked him to look around so they could take and the fact that they were not alone in their hardship. they told me their goal this year was to win the championship. I paused and took in this information. I looked in their eager, earnest eyes and said, “raise your hand if every time you played a team, their best players got hurt. And you easily won every game, and got the championship. “ no hands went up. In fact, the players faces look disgusted. The thought of getting their goal, in that way, was repulsive to them. I extrapolated, “ so you say you want a championship, but what I think you really want, is the opportunity to face, adversity, and overcome it.” We humans, pretend like we don’t like adversity. We face challenges in life, and sometimes we think to ourselves, gosh, why does it have to be this hard? Why do all these things keep happening to me? But deep down, we LOVE adversity. We thrive in it. We select goals that have adversity built into them. When presented with the option of reaching our goals without the adversity, they lose all meaning. Victor Frankel famously wrote in man’s search for meaning that friction is an important part of being a healthy human being. There are two types of adversity in life: Adversity we choose Adversity we don’t choose I believe that we train for the adversity we don’t use with the adversity that we do choose. What’s the situation you find yourself in right now that’s challenging? I want you to consider the fact that this exact situation is happening for you, not to you. It’s calling you to grow into a better version of yourself. It’s calling you to look for solutions in new ways. It’s calling you to uncover more of who you really are. I want to invite you to consider the fact that while you may note like this situation, deep down, you love it. Because you know you are exactly where you’re supposed to be.
